The crisis facing California sea lions
State officials have declared an “unusual mortality event” for California sea lions, after an unusually high number of pups barely clinging to life have recently washed ashore.
For a sense of the sheer number of pups who have reportedly been found washed up:
In Los Angeles County, nearly 400 pups have been stranded since the beginning of the year. Last year, 36 were reported during that stretch.
As of March 24, officials said, 214 sea lions were reported stranded in San Diego County, 189 in Orange County, 108 in Santa Barbara County and 42 in Ventura County.

Metalcore band Killswitch Engage have released their sixth album ‘Disarm The Descent’ via Roadrunner Records April 2nd, 2013. A lineup change has occurred, and their previous vocalist Howard is no longer in the band..but now the original singer Jesse is back in the mix (he’s definitely improved over the years his low growls/screams are legit). They’re still going hard although I know some of us miss Howard, I know I do. If you’re unfamiliar with this band and like metal or hardcore music then do yourself a favor and look them up. KsE is one of my favorite bands. Oh, and this album is pretty awesome by the way. Instrumentation is on point (some epic solos and drums are on point), vocals are great and those lyrics will amp you up. Plenty of melodic riffage and sometimes even a hint of old school hardcore flavor.

Tyler, the Creator of the hip hop group Odd Future Wolf Gang… released his third album ‘Wolf’ via Odd Future Records April 2nd, 2013. I was uncertain about what he would bring to the table, but I give the dude props and I’ll explain why in a second. When I first checked out Odd FutureI didn’t really like the subject matter I heard from Tyler so I just passed on them. Goblin came and I still was on the fence but I noticed he was skilled enough to portray other concepts and ideas pretty good as well as produce his own material. Anyways last year Hodgy, Syd, Frank, Earl, and Domo have shown me their collective is a uniquely talented force to be reckoned with. So with that said I was like yeah I’ll check out Tyler’s album and the first thing that I noticed was how dope the production was (very Neptunes -esque) and those features are quite legit. Secondly I noticed his lyrics game has stepped up and they’re great within his concept he get’s really introspective too. All in all it’s good LP check it out if you’re into hip hop.

Modern classic soul artist Michael Kiwanuka released his debut album ‘Home Again’ March 12th, 2012. And man all I can say is this dude is on some retro Motown esque- tip. Kiwanuka does a great job at capturing the soul/r&b vibes of Marvin Gaye and Issac Hayes!! Don’t sleep on this classic soul/blues album fam.

Whether or not they’re aware of it everyone knows who the The Strokes are… With that said, they’ve dropped their fifth album ’Comedown Machine’ March 26, 2013. And I just want to say this album is cool with me because of it’s variety in sound. There’s punk, indie, and funky vibes in this album and it still remains hella catchy. If you like indie music bands like Minus the Bear or Cloud Nothings then this LP is up your alley.

Post hardcore band The Color Morale released their album ‘Know Hope’ March 26th, 2013. This album encapsulates it’s title. The lyrics are very positive with messages of, you guessed it “hope,” optimism, perseverance etc. The instrumentation was on point. Yes plenty of breakdowns and lots of nice melodies within the riffage. But what really caught me off guard was the lead vocalist Garret Rapp who not only has improved his singing and screaming, but at times his singing reminded me of Jonny Craig so I know he’s doing something right. Anyways in a nutshell this album is great and anyone who likes bands like We Came as Romans, Broadway or Dance Gavin Dance will dig this. I know I do.
